Austin Holcombe Rebounds for Lake View Checkers
After encountering bad luck on Friday night, Austin Holcombe bounced back to take the $2,000 victory in Saturday night's Renegades of Dirt Modified event at Lake View Motor Speedway (Nichols, S.C.).
Austin's weekend opened on Friday at the South Carolina oval, where he hit the ground running against a 16-car field in the Renegades of Dirt Modified division.
He qualified third fastest in time trials before finishing second in the dash to lock into the second starting spot for the feature.
Austin led early in the feature until a quarter panel cut the right-rear tire, which sent him to the back of the field. He drove from 18th back to sixth before being collected in another accident. Holcombe headed to the tail a second time and was back up to the eighth position when he was collected in a wreck that ended his night early.
On Saturday night Austin hoped for better luck, and he'd find just that. He started the night by setting fast time in Renegades of Dirt Modified qualifying. An invert of six left him starting sixth in the dash. He passed one competitor in the dash, which resulted in him starting fifth in the feature.
He was up to the third position by the first lap and charged to the lead on lap 18. Despite a late-race, broken shock mount spring and shock, Austin held on for his 16th victory of the season.
He was followed across the finish line by John DeMoss, Jason Floyd, Alyssa Rowe, and Doug Penny.
Saturday action also found Austin competing in the 602 Modified ranks, where he qualified third. Early in the feature he raced into the second position, and after a hard-fought battle he crossed the finish line in third.
